Fashion, design, painting and illusion, Lucy McKenzie’s kaleidoscope practice comes under the microscope at Tate Liverpool, in the first UK retrospective of her work to date.
Large-scale architectural paintings, fashion and design works and illusionistic ‘trompe l’oeil’ works will be on display. Known for her creative collaborations, Lucy McKenzie was particularly interested in challenging the notion of authorship – this is demonstrated through her adventures in the art of window dressing, such as Rebecca (2019), which also explores the perception of window dressing as an art that requires little skill.
The Glasgow-born, Brussels-based artist is a skilful painter and often works with illusionistic techniques that deceive the eye. Recurring themes in her work include the representation of women, gender politics, post-war muralism, music sub-cultures and the iconography of international sport.
80 works will be on display in this major exhibition.
